What to Mix with Spiced Rum: 10 of the Best Serves
Spiced rum is one of the most mixer-friendly spirits you can pour. Its warmth, sweetness and aromatic complexity mean it plays well with almost everything - from the obvious (ginger beer, cola) to the surprisingly excellent (cold brew coffee, cloudy apple juice). The trouble is knowing where to start, and which combinations actually work.
We've been making and serving spiced rum at Salford Distillery since 2018. These are the ten pairings we recommend most often - and the bottle from our range that works best for each.
1. Ginger Beer
The classic for good reason. The carbonation and natural warmth of a good ginger beer amplifies the spice notes in the rum, creating a serve that's greater than the sum of its parts. The key is to use a proper ginger beer with real heat to it - a bland, overly sweet ginger beer will dull the rum rather than lift it.
How to serve: Fill a highball glass with ice. Add 50ml of rum. Top with 150ml of ginger beer. Squeeze in a wedge of lime and drop it in. That's it.
Best with: Salford Dark Spiced - the dry, oak-aged base stands up to the intensity of the ginger beautifully.
2. Cola
Rum and cola is one of the most consumed drinks in the world, and it remains a reliable option because the sweetness and vanilla notes of cola mirror what's already in the rum. The combination is better than it sounds on paper - particularly if you use a quality cola and a decent pour of rum rather than a thimble of spirit lost in a pint of mixer.
How to serve: 50ml rum over ice in a highball. Top with cola. A squeeze of lime brightens the whole thing considerably.
Best with: Original Golden Spiced - smooth, vanilla-led, and just sweet enough to make the combination sing.
3. Cloudy Apple Juice
This one surprises people. Cloudy apple juice - not clear, not from concentrate - is one of the best things you can put with a spiced rum. The natural acidity and fruit character cut through the sweetness of the spirit, and the combination has an almost autumnal quality: warming, fruity, and slightly tart. It's particularly good with a rum that has caramel and dried fruit notes.
How to serve: 50ml rum over ice. Top with good cloudy apple juice. A cinnamon stick stirred through it if you're feeling festive.
Best with: Salford Dark Spiced - the oak and dried fruit notes in the rum meet the apple juice halfway.
4. Ginger Ale
Lighter and less intense than ginger beer, ginger ale is the subtler alternative for people who find ginger beer too assertive. It lets the rum do more of the talking while still providing the gingery warmth that makes this pairing work. A good choice for an afternoon serve when you want something refreshing rather than punchy.
How to serve: 50ml rum over ice in a highball. Top with ginger ale. Garnish with a slice of fresh ginger or a strip of orange peel.
Best with: Original Golden Spiced - its lighter, more citrus-forward profile works well with ginger ale's gentler heat.
5. Lemonade
Classic British lemonade - ideally a cloudy, sharp one rather than the ultra-sweet supermarket versions - is an excellent mixer for spiced rum. The acidity cuts the sweetness of the spirit and the result is genuinely refreshing. Add a handful of mint and a squeeze of fresh lime and you're edging toward a rum-based lemonade that works brilliantly on a warm afternoon.
How to serve: 50ml rum over lots of ice. Top with lemonade. Add fresh mint and a lime wedge.
Best with: Original Golden Spiced or Honey Rum - the honey rum in particular creates an exceptional combination with cloudy lemonade.
6. Cold Brew Coffee
This is the combination that launched our Salford Coffee Rum - a collaboration with Salford Roasters that cold-brews locally roasted coffee directly into the rum. But even with a standard spiced rum, cold brew coffee is an excellent mixer. The bitterness of the coffee balances the sweetness of the rum, and the combination has the depth and richness of an after-dinner drink without feeling heavy.
How to serve: 50ml Coffee Rum over ice. Top with cold brew coffee. A float of oat milk cream on top if you want something indulgent.
Best with: Salford Coffee Rum - the coffee is already in the bottle, which makes this the most effortless serve on the list.
7. Pineapple Juice
Pineapple juice and rum is one of the great Caribbean pairings - and it works just as well with a British spiced rum as it does with a traditional Caribbean expression. The tropical sweetness and acidity of fresh pineapple juice cut beautifully through the warming spice notes, and the combination feels genuinely summery even in the middle of a Manchester winter.
How to serve: 50ml rum over ice. 100ml fresh pineapple juice. A squeeze of lime. For a longer drink, top with a splash of soda.
Best with: Original Golden Spiced - the vanilla and citrus notes in the rum pair naturally with pineapple.
8. Blackcurrant Cordial
The classic dockside serve. Rum and Black - rum mixed with blackcurrant cordial - was the drink of the Salford dockworkers, and we make our own version inspired by it: Salford Rum & Black, crafted with locally sourced blackcurrants. But the combination works with any good spiced rum and a quality blackcurrant cordial. The tartness of the blackcurrant cuts through the sweetness of the rum, and the deep purple colour is spectacular.
How to serve: 50ml rum over ice. 15ml blackcurrant cordial. Top with soda water or lemonade. Alternatively, try our Rum & Black straight over ice, no mixer needed.
Best with: Salford Rum & Black - the blackcurrant is already there, made with Salford-grown fruit.
9. Grapefruit Juice
Less common than the other citrus pairings but genuinely excellent - fresh grapefruit juice brings a bitter, aromatic complexity that you don't get from lime or orange. It's particularly good with darker, more complex spiced rums where you want the mixer to match the intensity of the spirit rather than simply sweeten it. Add a pinch of salt to the glass, which is an old bartender's trick for making grapefruit flavours pop.
How to serve: 50ml rum over ice. Top with fresh grapefruit juice. Pinch of salt. Slice of grapefruit to garnish.
Best with: Salford Dark Spiced - the dry, complex base handles the bitterness of the grapefruit with ease.
10. Honey and Hot Water
As the evenings get colder, this becomes the serve we come back to most often. Honey, hot water and spiced rum in a mug is essentially a hot toddy without the whisky - warming, comforting, and genuinely restorative on a cold night. Add a slice of lemon and a cinnamon stick and it becomes something that feels almost medicinal in the best possible way.
How to serve: 50ml rum in a pre-warmed mug. One heaped teaspoon of good honey. Top with hot water (not boiling - just off the boil). Squeeze of lemon. Cinnamon stick. Let it steep for a minute before drinking.
Best with: Salford Honey Rum - the honey is already in the bottle, which makes this an even simpler and more indulgent version of the serve.
